Denise Lee

Territories of Isolation, Territories of Belonging

ABSTRACT

What is your relationship with the city? Exploring themes of isolation, alienation, connection, community and belonging, a triptych of participatory performances took place in different public spaces around the city of Weimar in negotiation with the pandemic and its conditions. Choral recitations of poems arranged through a redactive process using transcriptions from interviews with individuals - outsiders residing in the city - were preceded by discussions about place, memory and identity, interacting with the cityscape and turning archive material into living, participatory practice in public space. Participants were invited to reflect on their own experiences and the text with each other before interpreting them together in spoken word, transforming the individual experience into a collective one.
